Emma Jane is an art director/designer at an advertising agency in Johannesburg. She also has a very successful blog and runs a photography business with her husband Dylan, called Lad & Lass.
How long have you been interested in photography?
Since Dylan and I got together. When we started dating he had just got his first SLR camera and I was his test subject for everything.
We experimented with film and lighting and I think I naturally got more curious and wanted to be behind the camera more instead of having a camera in my face all the time.
Who/What are your inspirations?
Life, people and human emotion.
How do you germinate ideas for your work?
I don’t really like anything too contrived, I like to be a fly on the wall and capture what’s in front of me in an interesting or unexpected way so I guess I don’t plan too much
What’s the greatest picture you didn’t take?
Dylan set a self timer on the camera when he proposed in Paris and captured my reaction so well. I love that picture and to me that’s probably the greatest picture I didn’t take
Which photographer would you most like to work with?
What keeps you awake at night?
Ideas and dreams for the future.
If you hadn’t have become a creative, what would you have liked to have been?
What do you think makes a photograph above average?
If it makes you feel something.
What’s your favourite part of South Africa to photograph?
We were in Elgin in December and that was really beautiful, probably also Franshoek.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Stop over thinking and over dramatizing everything.
Do you have a life philosophy?
Keep moving forward, take risks and always try to do something new
What do you love about wedding photography in particular?
I love love, and getting to capture that is pretty awesome
‘Lad and Lass’ in three words.
