Firstly, you will need to know what your needs are in regards to a manual or digital camera lenses . Once you have mastered the basics, you will realise that the better the lens is, the more professional and vivid your pictures will become. There are standard lenses, wide-angle lenses and telephoto lenses. If you need to create standard pictures, the standard lens will suit your needs to a tee. Wedding photos, travel shots, group photos and so on can all be taken with a standard lens to get that perfect shot.
A wide-angle lens is awesome for perspective shots, and for providing an incredible shot of subjects with correct depth of field - close-up shots, shots with a distinct foreground and indoor scenes really ‘pop’ with a wide-angle lens. For long-distance shots, the often costly telephoto lenses are your best bet. Other speciality lenses include fish-eye (distorted bubble-like shots) and macro (extreme close-up).
There may also be certain features that you are looking for in a lens, such as focal length. This ranges from 50-55mm for standard lenses all the way up to 500mm for the very best telephoto lenses. For ease and added simplicity an Auto Focus (AF) is an ideal solution to an often tricky problem. Manual Focus can be less prohibitive in terms of cost, but an AF lens will determine the best shot for you in most situations. Please note that in 99% of lenses, AF can be turned off.
Make sure that your camera lens is compatible. Certain lenses for Nikon will work on an Olympus camera, yet others will not. Read the specifications of the camera very closely in order to determine if the lens will work on the camera’s body. Find lenses for Canon, Sigma, Nikon and more at mycamera.co.za.
