Olympus is a widely recognised brand with origins in Japan and is most famously known for the manufacture of optics for various industries. Olympus’ first camera, the Semi- Olympus I, launched in 1936 and was a medium-format camera. During this time the company also introduced the Zuiko lens to the world. Olympus produced a total of seven medium-format cameras between 1936 and 1952 with a break in production during World War II. Production of the company’s first 35mm camera commenced in 1948 but with a 35mm format that measured 24x32mm as opposed to the now standard 24x36mm format. The film format was subsequently modified to 24x36mm.

The company launched the half-frame film format under the PEN moniker in 1959. The PEN cameras were compact and featured innovative ideas for the time. Cumulative PEN film camera sales exceeded 17 million units and the original concept lead to the manufacture of the PEN F series. PEN cameras were widely used as a secondary camera by professional photographers.

Over the years Olympus has produced the OM single lens reflex cameras, Mju or Stylus compact cameras and APS cameras, but only produced this film format for a brief period due to the emergence of compact digital cameras digital cameras. The company’s current lineup includes the outstanding PEN digital series, Tough shockproof compact cameras and the OM-D Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds cameras.
